Don’t know if you guys heard of this. Somewhere in Pasir Ris lives a Godzilla. And though this Godzilla is seriously huge but it is not ugly and infact it’s eatable. If you’re living in Pasir Ris, then by now you’ll know that I’m not talking about the real Godzilla monster from Japan but a pau maker who named his stall the Godzilla Handmade Tim Sum & Pau.

Over the years, customers from this pau stall had requested for gigantic paus to be made and it was so well received that he decided to put it on his menu and then one fine day, he decided to name his stall the Godzilla Handmade Tim Sum & Pau.

I am usually not a fan of ‘extra large size’ food because for me, it’s quality over quantity. At times it’s really the moderate proportion of food being served to you that can make you keep coming back for more. Judgement of quantity is important as far the ’shiokness’ factor of a food is concerned.

Inside of Godzilla Pau

Godzilla Pau

A gigantic pau at Godzilla Handmade Tim Sum & Pau will cost you $3.80. It’s about 2.5 to 3 times that of a big pork pau. The ingredients inside are the usual stuff except that they added half a salted egg yolk, a few pieces mushrooms and about 1/4 of a lup cheong. The taste is just exactly like a big pork pau and nothing much to rave. As the ingredients are heavier in the pau, it kinda sit tightly on the bottom bit of the pau and so it’s pretty compressed at the bottom. I see that as a minus point as a good part of it can’t be eaten because it’s wet, it’s compressed and it sticks to the piece of paper at the bottom, if you get what I mean.

A big pork pau will cost you around $1 to $2 depending where you go. At Godzilla Handmade Tim Sum & Pau, it’s $1.30 and Godzilla pau(2.5 to 3 x bigger) is at $3.80. So will you rather buy 3 big pau for $3.90 or 1 Godzilla pau for $3.80 if say you want to spend around that amount? For me big pau is the logical choice since the taste and ingredients are more or less the same. Godzilla pau is one of those things that you buy and eat for fun more than anything else. It does not taste any better, is not any cheaper and infact it has bad ‘ecology’ as far the weight of the ingredients is concerned though my friend who recommended this to me was raving about it. Definitely not a die die must eat pau but maybe you can save some money on cakes if you’re going to celebrate a birthday for a friend and his favourite food happens to be a pau. It sure look interesting with a candle or two on it.

Price: $3.80

Recommendation: Godzilla Pau(It’s only famous for it’s size. The taste is just like any other pau.

Conclusion: Just another Pau. Big in size but flavour is the same as any pork pau. One of those things that you will WOW at seeing it but the taste part did not WOW me unfortunately. Would be interesting if they could do a smaller one with all the ‘ho liao’ ingredients. Unfortunately big Paus does not mean good paus for me.

Likes: The dough is thicker at the top which is quite good if you like to eat the dough part of the pau.

Dislikes: Wet and soggy at the bottom which render that part uneatable.
