I don’t want to rehash what I already shared in the Hainanese Curry Rice Challenge thus far, so I’ll try to offer some new insights.

This Hainanese Curry Rice adventure so far has been pretty educational because I get to see what Hainanese Curry Rice can mean to others. I think when we crave for a particular food, and can’t wait to visit a particular stall for a fix, the flavour we’ve acquired in the past should have a big role to play. In the past, because I’ve not eaten at many Hainanese Curry Rice stall, I thought that I can easily go to any famous stall and get the similar kind of shiokadodoness like how I can get from my favourite stall. Now I know that it is not the case of “any stall also can”.

For example, the queues at Hougang Hainanese Curry Rice at Bendemeer and the Hainanese Curry Rice at Beo Crescent were pretty long but yet I didn’t feel satisfied after parting my money at the 2 stalls.

I’ve been told many good things about this Feng Kee Hainanese Curry Rice at Pasir Panjang Food Centre. Frankly those things I heard didn’t really excite me because most of the stalls that I’ve eaten at also had many good things said about them but yet most didn’t impress me much.

Usually when I arrived at a new Hainanese Curry Rice stall, I would look for the pot or pots of Hainanese gravy. I mean the word “curry” may be a common word but the definition is wide you know.

Hainanese curry on rice: 8/10  

Hainanese Sotong Curry: 8/10  

Feng Kee Hainanese Curry Rice fortunately have a setup that is very similar to Scissors Cut at Jalan Besar. For those who are familar with the Scissors Cut, you have seen those 3 big pots of gravy at the front right? It’s the same at Feng Kee Hainanese Curry Rice. They seem to be shouting out loud to me “It’s these 3 pots of gravy that matters and not what you order!”

The Lor Bak which is what I was eyeing unfortunately sold out already so I went with pork chop, stewed cabbage and curry sotong. It was to be the most expensive Hainanese Curry Rice meal in my entire life. For $6, I spent some time figuring how it ended up at that figure. I mean even if the sotong was $2, then $4 for rice, pork chop and cabbage is still quite ex right?

Anyway for that price, I was half expecting it to be seriously shiokadodoly good. Absolutely spot on! The pork chop tasted like a cross between Taiwanese Crispy Cutlet and KFC original chicken! Shiok! My only complain is that it came cold, but then I was there pretty late. The stewed cabbage again impressed me! I have reasons to believe the cabbage here is one of the best around. Absolutely flavourful with a little bit of sweetness. Just how I think a Hainanese one should be. But I have to warn you that mine came very very wet and so a little oily. Won’t be surprised if they added lard to it. The curry sotong is also very very good. It wasn’t chewy, wasn’t hard, it had a texture that is pretty unique.. almost… almost as soft as fish cakes. I’m seriously keen to know how they do this sotong, whether they stewed it for hours or cooked it with bare minimum heat quickly.

The gravy on my rice tasted absolutely marvellous. It had something like 3-4 kinds of gravy and did quite well for me.

All in all, shiokadodoness level is comparable to my favourite Scissors Cut. If only they have a branch in the eastern part of Singapore. If they do, for $6 I’ll still gladly join the queue.

Price: $6

Recommendation: Pork chop, cabbage, sotong and many others.

Conclusion: Very Hainanese to me. The most expensive Hainanese Curry Rice meal I’ve ever had but worth every penny spent. Can easily imagine super long queues formed at peak hours. They open from 4am so that obviously tells you something. If you stay in the west and happen to need a Hainanese Curry Rice fix in the middle of the night, now you know where to go.

Likes: Hainanese flavour is very strong.

Dislikes: Food was little cold though I went almost 10 hours after they opened.
