Swee Heng Wanton Noodle – The $133,000 Wanton Mee Stall
By Alfred February 2, 2010
For the Wanton Mee lovers who frequent Chomp Chomp at Serangoon Gardens, I am sure you would have eaten at Swee Heng Wanton Noodle which is hiding in one of the corners of the food centre. I am a suaku here because I have never taken interest in food at those stalls at that little corner. However, recently I was told that Swee Heng Wanton Noodle is one of the 'Die Die Must Queue' stalls in Chomp Chomp so here ...

Ponggol Nasi Lemak Centre – As Least There Is A Reason For Me To Join The Queue!
By Alfred November 17, 2009
Ponggol Nasi Lemak Centre at Hougang must be the most extraordinary Nasi Lemak stall in Singapore. Customers virtually clustered to form queues from 6pm to late nights everyday without fail. I guess it is very easy for foreigners to think this is a die die must QUEUE stall but chances are, for many Nasi Lemak connoisseurs, the chilli here simply cannot make it. Good chilli sauce that can go well with the rice is very important for me in ...

Original Serangoon Fried Hokkien Mee – Simply Second To None!
By Alfred October 15, 2009
Will Malaysia ever dare say that Hokkien Mee was invented by them? Actually, it is very obvious that many foods though have the same names but are clearly referring to different things and flavours in Singapore and Malaysia. Just like Hokkien Mee in Malaysia(which is often called KL hokkien Mee) is yellow mee fried in dark soy sauce while ours are "2-noodles" fried in prawn soup which we also called Hokkien Hae Mee. But then Hokkien Hae Mee in Malaysia ...

The Hainanese Curry Rice Challenge: Sin Chie Toke Huan Hainanese Curry Rice – Part 14 of 15
By Alfred October 7, 2009
I am pretty sure that most people know Katong is where they should head for Laksa and Changi is where they should head for Nasi Lemak. So do you know what you should head to Hougang for? The Teochews, Hokkiens and Hakkas had arrived in Singapore much earlier therefore they were well entrenched in all kind of trades while the Hainanese being one of the 'late arrivals' here due to the 'late opening' of Hainan Island to foreign trade, were ...

Astons Specialties – Now I know why the queue is long!
By Alfred September 17, 2009
After dining at Astons Prime once and Astons Express many times, it's time for me to find out what's going on inside Astons Specialties. I'm sure you guys have heard of the famous super long persistent queues outside of Astons Specialties at Katong every night. Reaching the entrance by about 8pm, we were glad to be greeted by a queue that's not so long, though we were unimpressed by the waiting time. There were only about ...

Tian Wai Tian Fish Head Steamboat – How Good?
By Alfred July 21, 2009
If you have friends visiting from overseas, what will be the thing in Singapore that you will tell them 'You DIE DIE Must Eat'? Unfortunately I think, the phrase 'Die Die Must Eat' somehow cannot be applied universally. I'll tell you why. Everybody has different eating habits, likes and dislikes or even preference for type of eating places. For example, you may like to eat at restaurants or cafes and so you will find no pleasure in eating a plate of ...

Whampoa Drive Xin Heng Feng Fish Head Steamboat
By Alfred June 5, 2009
One of those food that I didn't grew up eating and actually wondered how it taste like even up to 2 years ago is this thing called Fish Head Steamboat. Ok, obviously you wouldn't need to be very smart to figure that it is a steamboat but with fish head in it right? That's one of the reasons why in the past I've never thought about wanting to go and eat this thing because I don't know how to appreciate fish ...

Chomp Chomp Chicken Wing – Still A Class Above The Rest
By Alfred May 13, 2009
If like me, you stay in the East and love eating hawker food, then you must have heard of this hawker called Chomp Chomp Food Centre. Why I'm saying so is because I have asked many of my friends who are staying in the West and many of them have told me that they have never heard of it so I think Chomp Chomp Food Centre must be really an 'Eastern Thing'. Well it's like my 'Western' friends were telling me ...

Astons Express Prime Sirloin Steak
By Alfred May 7, 2009
Where I was staying before at Tampines, there used to have a really really good western food at the kopitiam 5 mins from my block. It was run by an old hainanese couple and the chicken chop or pork chop or whatever chop came with this wonderful mild curried flavour gravy that is so deliciously unique. It went to the point where I started asking for that special gravy even when I ordered a cutlet or fish n chips. And ever ...
