I dare say that Chomp Chomp Food Centre is one of the better place to eat BBQ stingray, even today. Actually there are not many places in Singapore where people specifically go for stingrays. Some of the places I can think of are East Coast Lagoon, Lau Pa Sat, Newton Hawker Centre. Are there any that I’ve missed out?

Of course we don’t go to Newton Hawker Centre for our seafood, Singaporeans are too smart for that. It’s just like Phuketians are also smart enough not to go Patong Beach for their seafood fix.

My seafood experience at Lau Pa Sat was pretty bad the last time I went, with plenty of touting and after I anyhow tikam, kanna a mediocre one. East Coast Lagoon is supposed to be famous for many other foods until we would forget about stingray when we are there. So unless you don’t mind to cross the bridge to Taman Garden at JB, where else can you go for a good stingray fix except Chomp Chomp?

Anyway, for those who had been to Chomp Chomp many moons ago(those days when the market wasn’t revamped yet), you should had eaten stingrays there and I for one still reminisce about the good old days when you get a good slab with very tok kong(powerful) chilli sauce for only a few dimes. There was little concern about quality back then. You can walk up to any stalls to order and you can be expected to get something that’s going to worth your time.

BBQ stingray $8: 7.75/10 ★★★★★★★¾☆☆

Today of course it is a different story. Many have appeared to steal a piece of the action and for $8, if you think it’s all the same, let me tell you that it’s not and if you are sway(unlucky), you can literally get one on your table that can make you “jiak beh lok”(cannot eat).

The stall to go to for your stingray at Chomp Chomp Hawker Centre is Hai Wei Yuan Seafood BBQ. For those who remember, in the past, they used to sell different kinds of Otah too. Nowadays it’s seafood only and the stingray is still as good.

The most important thing for a grilled stingray is of course the sambal chilli and here, it’s as good as it gets. And by saying that, I mean that it’s comparable to the really good ones which are across the causeway. It does help with the fact that they bother to throw in a few pieces of onions which makes the overall flavour oh that bit more shiok.

It’s becoming a bit of a minefield nowadays trying to eat certain foods in Singapore with the new generation of hawkers sprucing up whose skills are “not yet there” but yet they are “everywhere”. But with Hai Wei Yuan Seafood BBQ at Chomp Chomp, it’s still the “old guards” doing the grill so you can be sure that you’re getting a deal that’s pretty real.

So where do you get your BBQ stingray fix?

Price: $8

Recommendation: BBQ stingray and other seafood.

Conclusion: One of those places that you can’t go wrong ordering bbq seafood. Prices are still comparatively low and quality is quite comparable to the good ones you can get anywhere else. Waiting time can be long during meal times.

Likes: Chilli is shiok and overall taste is very well balanced.

Dislikes: Wait time can be long.

Well didn’t find the stingray there fantastic. It was quite a small piece for $12 the other time I was there. I’m talking about the stall in the middle row near the roadside.

I had eaten Boon Tat at lau pa sat and chomp chomp. Expensive and mediocre for me. The chilli la la was seriously bland.
